Afghanistan, Uzbekistan Officials Hold Talks on Trade, Border Cooperation

The fifth meeting of the Joint Working Commission for Cooperation between Afghanistan’s Balkh province and Uzbekistan’s Surkhandarya province was held in the city of Termez, Uzbekistan.
During the meeting, Mohammad Yousuf Wafa, Governor of Balkh, and Uzbek officials discussed strengthening trade, agricultural, and security relations, facilitating visa issuance and trade flows, ensuring border security, and expanding Afghanistan’s diplomatic relations.
Haji Zaid, the spokesperson for the Governor of Balkh, said: “Discussions covered scientific, cultural, security, trade, and agricultural matters, bilateral economic progress, visa issuance for businesspeople, air exports from Afghanistan to other countries, increased exports and imports via railway, border security, and expanding diplomatic ties.”
The Governor of Balkh called for a delegation from Uzbekistan to visit Balkh to enhance cooperation in the agricultural sector. In response, the Governor of Surkhandarya reaffirmed their commitment to continued collaboration and announced the dispatch of a technical team to assess erosion along the Amu River and strengthen agricultural cooperation with Afghanistan.
Moeen Gul Samkanai, political analyst told TOLOnews: “Uzbekistan wants to build closer ties with us, and we must also work within the framework of neighborly and international principles so both countries can reach mutual understanding and strengthen political and economic relations.”
Mohammad Nabi Afghan, economic analyst, added: “Uzbekistan has proven beneficial to us, as it enables trade routes to Kazakhstan, Russia, and Belarus. We must find solutions to existing and past challenges and expand bilateral trade based on mutual benefit and commitment.”
This meeting follows a recent visit by Mohammad Yousuf Wafa to Dushanbe, Tajikistan, on October 23 of this year, at the official invitation of the Tajik government. During that trip, he met with senior officials and discussed enhancing security, intelligence, and border cooperation between the two countries.
