Several residents of Kabul’s District 4 say that the drop in groundwater levels has created serious challenges for them and their families.
They are calling on the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan to address the issue.
Shahpoor, a resident of District 4, said: “We face many problems with water. We’ve been living here for twenty years, and every time, we’re forced to dig a new well.”
Abdul Rashid, another resident of the district, said: “We ask the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan to help us with water supply. Our water is going to Pakistan and Iran. There should be pipelines from the Panjshir and Salang rivers.”
Mehran, another local resident, said: “We bring four or five barrels and wait for hours just to get water. The situation has become very difficult.”
Experts warn that the water shortage is not just a local problem, but one with wide-ranging economic, social, and environmental consequences.
Najibullah Sadid, a water resources expert, said about the impacts of water scarcity: “When water access decreases, the entire economy suffers. We’ve seen displacement and migration in several provinces. In Herat, people migrated from neighboring provinces and even moved abroad.”
The Ministry of Energy and Water says that climate change and unplanned urban development have contributed to the decline in groundwater levels and damaged the country’s water resources.
Matiullah Abid, spokesperson for the Ministry of Energy and Water, said: “Climate change has not only affected Afghanistan but also countries across the region. Afghanistan is among the nations most severely hit by drought, and rainfall has decreased. In cities, unplanned development is a major cause of the decline in water resources.”
In recent years, Afghanistan has faced one of the most severe drought periods in its history. Groundwater levels in major cities, especially Kabul, have dropped significantly.
