Two power projects worth over $40 million have been inaugurated in the Gereshk district of Helmand province.
These projects aim to provide electricity to both Kandahar and Helmand provinces.
The two projects include the provision of electricity to 7,000 families and industrialists in Gereshk, Helmand, and the construction of a 110-kilovolt power transmission line from Sangin district in Helmand to Maiwand district in Kandahar.
The Director General of Da Afghanistan Breshna Sherkat (DABS), during the inauguration ceremony, stated that over $40 million has been spent on the implementation of both projects.
Abdul Bari Omar, the CEO of DABS, said: “We started working on this project eight months ago, and today, thankfully, we have successfully inaugurated and commissioned it.”
Industrialists and local residents consider the availability of electricity a vital step in boosting economic activity.
Haji Mohammad, head of the Gereshk Industrialists’ Association in Helmand, also said: “We didn’t have electricity and suffered great losses. Now that electricity has arrived, it will be very beneficial for us.”
Shah Agha, a resident of Helmand, said: “In today’s era, electricity is more important than anything else, because everything, from industry and commerce to household needs, depends on it.”
Saleh Mohammad, another Helmand resident, added: “This project is very useful. Factories will become operational, as people used to say that the lack of electricity was the reason they weren’t functioning.”
According to DABS officials, five billion Afghanis will be invested in expanding the electricity network in Helmand and Kandahar by the end of this year.
