While forced marriage remains one of the serious challenges in Afghan society, the Ministry for the Vice and Virtue of the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan has reported that 56 cases of forced marriage have been prevented over the past two months.
Saif-ul-Islam Khyber, spokesperson for the Ministry, stated: “In the past four years, nearly 7,000 cases of forced marriage have been prevented, and the ministry has ensured that these girls were granted their legitimate Islamic right, the right to marry freely and by their own choice.”
Legal experts believe that combating forced marriage requires long-term cultural and legal efforts.
Ruhullah Sakhizada, a legal analyst, told TOLOnews: “This issue must be mandatorily addressed by all judicial, legal, and security institutions across the country, including in the provinces and districts, to ensure such practices are prevented.”
Although there are no exact nationwide statistics on forced marriages, observers note that the official announcement of 56 prevented cases signals increased attention by relevant institutions to women’s rights.
Haseebullah Hanafi, a religious scholar, commented: “Forced marriages occurring in society go against the teachings of Islam and our traditions.”
Though the voices of many affected girls have yet to be heard, experts believe that even these early steps can help shift societal perspectives toward a future where marriage is not a matter of coercion, but a conscious and free choice.
