The European Union has confirmed contact with the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan regarding the return of migrants.
According to European media reports, the EU on Monday confirmed that it has begun exploratory talks with Afghanistan. These discussions are part of efforts to increase the number of deportations of asylum seekers whose applications have been rejected in Europe.
Anneleen Van Bossuyt, Belgium’s Minister of Migration, said: “We are unable to return irregular Afghan nationals, even after a conviction. This undermines public trust in asylum policy and affects our collective security. It is time for Europe to act together.”
Alireza Karimi, a migrant rights activist, stated: “Such approaches could create psychological pressure for migrants and increase feelings of insecurity and distrust among Afghan asylum seekers in Europe.”
Political analysts also believe that the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan should seize this opportunity to expand its relations with EU member states.
Aziz Stanekzai, a political analyst, told TOLOnews: “Even if the talks focus on migrants, they can be used to initiate diplomacy and open a new channel so the Islamic Emirate can establish its representations in European countries.”
Wahed Faqiri, an international relations expert, added: “The Islamic Emirate and the Afghan people should be prepared to ensure that those who are deported return to their country respectfully and humanely.”
This comes after the Islamic Emirate confirmed on July 23rd that it had sent two diplomats to Berlin to provide consular services to Afghan citizens.
In July, Germany also deported 81 Afghan asylum seekers accused of crimes back to Afghanistan via a Qatari-mediated arrangement. Following the start of this deportation process, Germany’s Interior Minister also announced her intention to visit Afghanistan.
