An increase in air pollution has caused concern among a number of residents in the capital.

According to residents, air pollution in Kabul has worsened in recent weeks, and they are calling on the authorities to prevent it from getting worse.

Feda Mohammad, a Kabul resident, said: “The air in Kabul has become very polluted. Compared to last week, the dust and pollution have significantly increased.”

Mohammad Nazir, another resident, added: “It’s increasing day by day. The air in Kabul was already bad due to the presence of old vehicles operating throughout the city.”

Some other Kabul residents emphasized the importance of public awareness and cooperation between the public, the municipality, and other institutions to reduce air pollution.

Baz Mohammad Mirzad, a resident of the capital, shared his opinion: “Mosque imams can use the pulpit to raise awareness, and people can guide each other to prevent air pollution from occurring anywhere.”

On the other hand, the National Environmental Protection Agency says that in coordination with other departments, including the traffic authority and Kabul municipality, they are working to prevent air pollution during the upcoming winter.

Mohebullah Bahar, spokesperson for the agency, stated: “The long-term plans are not solely the responsibility of the National Environmental Protection Agency. Kabul municipality, the General Directorate of Traffic, the Ministry of Energy and Water, and other agencies are working with us to reduce Kabul’s air pollution in the coming winter.”

Air pollution in Kabul is not a new issue. Every year, with the arrival of winter, pollution increases in Kabul and other major cities across the country, a recurring problem that has consistently drawn criticism from some citizens.
