The Defense Minister of the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan says Kabul seeks to establish relations with Islamabad based on good neighborliness and the expansion of trade.

In an interview with Al Jazeera, Mawlawi Mohammad Yaqoob Mujahid stated that tensions between Afghanistan and Pakistan benefit neither side and emphasized Kabul’s desire to resolve challenges through dialogue.

He said: “Afghanistan and Pakistan are neighboring countries. Tensions between them serve no one. Their relationship should be founded on mutual respect and good neighborly principles.”

Referring to the Doha agreement between the two countries, he noted that the upcoming meeting in Turkey will focus on mechanisms for implementing and monitoring the agreement.

Mujahid stressed that all parties must remain committed to every provision of the agreement. He added that Kabul is fully committed to the terms, and warned: “If Pakistan does not fulfill its obligations, it will create problems.”

He also called on mediating countries such as Türkiye and Qatar to assist in the implementation of the agreement between Kabul and Islamabad.

In response to a question about India’s alleged role in recent tensions between Afghanistan and Pakistan, the Afghan defense minister dismissed the accusations as baseless.

He stated: “These accusations are groundless. Our policy will never involve using our territory against other countries. We maintain relations with India as an independent nation and will strengthen those ties within the framework of our national interests. At the same time, we will preserve our relations with Pakistan based on good neighborliness. Our aim is to expand relations, not create tensions. Pakistan’s accusations are unfounded, illogical, and unacceptable.”

Mawlawi Mohammad Yaqoob Mujahid further emphasized that if any country attacks Afghanistan, they will “bravely” defend their land, noting that Afghans have a long history of defending their homeland.

The country’s Defense Minister also stated that Pakistan labels its political opponents as “terrorists.”

Yaqoob Mujahid added that there has never been a clear definition of the term “terrorist.”

He emphasized that the policy of the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan is not to support armed groups against any other country, including Pakistan.
