The United Nations has announced that over 400 health centers have been shut down in Afghanistan this year.

Farhan Haq, Deputy Spokesperson for the UN Secretary-General, stated that the closure of these centers has deprived more than three million people of access to healthcare services.

He said: “In Afghanistan, more than 420 health facilities have closed this year, forcing 3 million people to go without critical care.”

Despite this, citizens in various provinces continue to call for the establishment of more healthcare facilities and the full delivery of medical services.

Dr. Sayed Abdullah Ahmadi noted: “For years, the healthcare delivery system in Afghanistan has depended on foreign aid, during both the republic and the past four years. Health officials have not been able to develop an effective strategy for providing services based on Afghanistan’s domestic economy.”

Although the Ministry of Public Health has not commented on the issue recently, on Tuesday, Minister Noor Jalal Jalali emphasized the need for self-reliance in the healthcare sector.

He said: “If aid is cut off tomorrow, we must have a plan to stand on our own feet and free ourselves from this dependency.”

It is worth noting that last year, the Ministry of Public Health had also announced the construction of 318 hospitals across the provinces.
