Richard Bennett, the UN special rapporteur for Afghanistan, has called for restraint and the protection of civilians following recent deadly border clashes between Taliban forces and the Pakistani military.
“I am deeply concerned by reports of numerous civilian casualties as well as displacement caused by ongoing armed clashes on the Afghanistan–Pakistan border,” Richard Bennett wrote Tuesday on X. “I urge all parties to exercise maximum restraint, protect civilians, and abide by international law.”
Bennett’s comments come after days of intensifying violence along Afghanistan’s southeastern border. Taliban and Pakistani forces clashed early Wednesday in Kandahar’s Spin Boldak district and in several areas of Paktika province.
Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid said the fighting in Spin Boldak began around 4 a.m. and lasted several hours.
