A program titled “Afghanistan on the Path to COP30” was held in Kabul to discuss the country’s role and participation in the upcoming COP30 climate summit.

The Director General of the National Environmental Protection Agency emphasized the need for coordination among various institutions and Afghan participants ahead of COP30.

Matiul Haq Khalis, referring to natural disasters in the current and past years, stated that Afghanistan is severely affected by climate change and its consequences, and the international community should not politicize environmental issues.

He added, “Participants should share opinions, listen to others, and provide information on what is needed and what should be done, so that our voice at COP30 is unified.”

Several international organizations, including the European Union, also reiterated their support for Afghanistan in confronting the impacts of climate change.

Benjamin Weiss, Head of the EU Political Section in Kabul, stated: “The European Union is focusing on direct support for communities around Afghanistan. The EU works with various organizations to ensure that its assistance reaches the people of Afghanistan.”

A number of experts described Afghanistan’s presence at the upcoming COP30 as crucial and stressed that the conference should be used to highlight the effects of climate change on the country.

Umar Mokhtar Nikzad, a university professor, remarked: “The delegation representing Afghanistan can deliver its message and ensure we play our essential role in addressing climate change.”

The COP30 climate summit is scheduled to be held in early November in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. A delegation from Afghanistan is expected to attend.
