The National Environmental Protection Agency, in collaboration with UNICEF, held a consultative meeting to develop a National Climate Change Adaptation Plan.
The head of the National Environmental Protection Agency (NEPA) stated that climate change directly affects the country’s water resources, sanitation systems, and overall public health stability.
Matiulhaq Khalis, Director General of the National Environmental Protection Agency, said: “Water, health, sanitation, and water-related programs have been severely affected, as climate change has a direct impact on them. Therefore, it is essential to find and implement strategies to prevent damage to the sectors most vulnerable to climate impacts.”
Rohullah Amin, Director of Climate Change at the agency, said: “The aim was to determine how we can develop a national adaptation plan for the water and sanitation sectors, so that the existing needs in these areas are reflected in the document and facilitate the attraction of projects related to water and sanitation.”
Meanwhile, the UNICEF representative in Afghanistan expressed support for the process, adding that the program marks an important step toward better coordination and joint action in preparing the National Climate Change Adaptation Plan.
Shiva Narain Singh, UNICEF Representative in Afghanistan, added: “We began this process with risk analysis because there was no specific guidance for climate-related risks across the country. Then we moved to developing climate strategies, and that work has now been done.”
At the conclusion of the meeting, participants emphasized the need for national coordination, use of scientific knowledge, development of effective strategies, and practical action to adapt to climate change risks.
