Officials at Indira Gandhi Children’s Hospital report a decline in measles cases in recent weeks.
Mohammad Arif Hasanzai, head of the internal medicine ward at the hospital, stated that nationwide vaccination campaigns have had a positive impact in reducing the spread of the disease.
Speaking to TOLOnews, Hasanzai said: “Throughout the year, we had more than 20 or even 25 measles patients admitted daily to this infectious ward.”
Rangina, a 9-month-old child, is currently hospitalized in the measles ward of Indira Gandhi Children’s Hospital.
Noor Bibi, Rangina’s mother, said: “She has had a fever for three or four days, also had diarrhea and throat pain. I took her to the doctor; they ran tests, examined her, and said she has measles.”
This comes as the Ministry of Public Health launched a nationwide measles vaccination campaign last month, scheduled in two phases. The second phase is set to begin this week in the remaining seventeen provinces.
Mansoor, a physician at the hospital, emphasized: “The most important prevention is timely vaccinationو especially for children under the age of five. Families should be encouraged to take their children to health centers or wherever vaccines are available.”
According to World Health Organization (WHO) statistics, from the beginning of this year until the 21st week, around 59,290 suspected measles cases were reported nationwide, of which approximately 384 have died.
