During the signing of a ceasefire agreement between Thailand and Cambodia in the Malaysian capital, U.S. President Donald Trump once again emphasized that he will swiftly resolve tensions between Afghanistan and Pakistan.

Trump stated that he has a close relationship with the commander of Pakistan’s army and its prime minister, and that resolving these tensions would be easy for him.

He said: “Although I heard that Pakistan and Afghanistan have started up. But I’ll get that solved very quickly. I know them both. And the Pakistan Field Marshal, and the Prime Minister are great people, and I have no doubt we’re going to get that done quickly.”

This is not the first time the U.S. president has commented on tensions between Afghanistan and Pakistan.

He has previously said twice that resolving such tensions would be easy for him.

A spokesperson for the Islamic Emirate also stated a few days ago that the United States had offered to mediate between Afghanistan and Pakistan, and added that the U.S. should use its influence over countries to assist Afghanistan.

Yousuf Amin Zazi, a military affairs analyst, commented: “What matters is which scenario benefits the U.S. more—war between Pakistan and Afghanistan or peace between them, since America has always prioritized its own interests.”

Trump’s remarks on a potential ceasefire between Afghanistan and Pakistan come as the second round of talks between the two countries is underway in Istanbul, Turkey, with no outcome reached so far.
