The number of patients undergoing treatment at the 4,000-bed drug rehabilitation hospital in Herat has seen a significant increase in recent weeks.
Officials say that alongside the rising number of deportations from Iran, the number of returning addicts has also surged.
Hayatullah Rouhani, Director of Counter-Narcotics at Herat Police Command, said: “Herat is a border province with Iran; Afghan migrants return from Iran through Herat, and most addicts remain in this province.”
Farid Ahmad, a 30-year-old resident of Shindand district in Herat, became addicted to drugs while working in Iran five years ago. After being deported from Iran, he is now receiving treatment at the specialized rehabilitation hospital.
Farid Ahmad, a patient under treatment, said: “When I went to Iran, I associated with people who used drugs, and I ended up getting addicted too.”
Many of the patients currently undergoing treatment say they turned to drugs while living in Iran.
Each of them has been receiving treatment at this center in Herat for months and is expected to soon reunite with their families and return to normal life.
Sayed Ahmad, another patient, said: “I became addicted in Iran and was living there until we were arrested for drug use and deported to Afghanistan.”
Esmatullah, also under treatment, stated: “I haven’t used drugs for six months now, and I’m thankful to the Mujahideen of the Islamic Emirate.”
According to statistics from Herat’s Counter-Narcotics Directorate, over the past three years, more than 35,000 addicts have been treated at this hospital.
Currently, nearly 4,000 addicts are under treatment at the facility. According to the Directorate, most of them became addicted in Iran and began treatment after returning to the country.
