Today (October 24) marks the 80th anniversary of the founding of the United Nations. On this occasion, the United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) announced its continued engagement with all stakeholders to support inclusive governance, human rights protection, and increased global support for the Afghan people.

Georgette Gagnon, Deputy Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General and Acting Head of UNAMA, emphasized that regional cooperation, international engagement, and diplomacy are essential elements for building a stable and just future in Afghanistan.

She stated: “This 80th anniversary reminds us of the power and necessity of multilateralism and collective action. Afghanistan’s path to stability and sustainable development cannot be walked alone.”

UN Secretary-General António Guterres also shared a message: “For 80 years, the UN has worked to forge peace, tackle poverty & hunger, advance human rights & build a more sustainable world.”

Meanwhile, there is currently no representative from the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan at the United Nations.

Zabihullah Mujahid, spokesperson for the Islamic Emirate, told TOLOnews that an official representative at the UN could play a crucial role in conveying Afghanistan’s views and pursuing related matters.

He added: “If Afghanistan had an active representation at the UN, not only would intergovernmental issues be addressed more effectively, but the country would also have a stronger voice in human rights, politics, solidarity, and natural disaster response, benefiting the Afghan people.”

Political analyst Janet Faheem Chakari said: “In these five years that Afghanistan has not held a seat at the UN General Assembly, many of the Afghan people’s basic rights have been undermined. Afghanistan should rejoin the General Assembly.”

This anniversary comes as the Islamic Emirate still lacks recognition and representation at the UN.

Mujahid further stressed that Afghanistan will not pay its dues to the UN until it is formally represented in the organization.

He said: “Until we are present there and take responsibility, paying our dues would be premature. In fact, under the current circumstances, it is they who owe us, not the other way around.”

The United Nations was officially established on October 24, 1945, following World War II. Afghanistan was one of the 51 founding countries that signed the UN Charter in San Francisco.

Today, the UN has 193 member states, but Afghanistan’s current government remains unrepresented.
