Today (Friday, October 24) marks United Nations Day and the 80th anniversary of the organization’s founding.

The UN Secretary-General stated that over the past eight decades, the organization has worked to sustain peace, combat poverty and hunger, promote human rights, and build a more sustainable world.

Antonio Guterres added in a statement that “today, more than ever, the world needs determined and united action to address challenges that no country can resolve alone.”

Meanwhile, on this occasion, the United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) reaffirmed that the UN remains a steadfast partner to the people of Afghanistan.

In a statement, UNAMA noted that Afghanistan is currently facing profound challenges, with nearly two-thirds of the population in need of humanitarian aid.

Expressing concern over declining funding, the mission warned that the situation of women and girls in Afghanistan is deteriorating, and that restrictions on education and employment are undermining the fundamental rights of people and the country’s future.

UNAMA further stated that with the intensifying return of Afghan migrants from neighboring countries, many areas in Afghanistan are under pressure to absorb millions of returnees.

In the statement, UNAMA’s Acting Head, Georgette Gagnon, was quoted as saying: “Afghanistan’s path to stability and sustainable development cannot be walked alone.”

The mission emphasized that it will continue to engage with all stakeholders to support inclusive governance, protect human rights, and enhance international support for the Afghan people.

Deputy UNAMA chief, Indrika Ratwatte, also called on the international community to renew its commitment and solidarity. “Today, tomorrow, and in the future, the United Nations will remain by the side of the Afghan people,” he said.
