With a seven-day deadline set by the Ministry of Interior for the registration and sticker issuance of right-hand drive vehicles, monitoring at the Kabul–Jalalabad gate has intensified.

Officials from the ministry state that up to twenty unregistered and undocumented right-hand drive vehicles are turned away from entering the capital each day.

Shafiullah, an employee of the Ministry of Interior, said: “Vehicles without a sticker, or those with a sticker from Kabul or another province, are given a grace period. We record their details, but they are not allowed to enter again.”

Mohammad Naeem, another ministry staff member, said: “We do not allow undocumented vehicles or those with eastern zone stickers to enter Kabul; all are sent back.”

On the 30th of Mizan (solar calendar), the ministry issued a notice stating that from that date, vehicle owners with right-hand drive vehicles must register and obtain a sticker from the province of their choice within seven days. The notice also announced that the movement of illegal vehicles in Kabul would be prohibited following the announcement.

The ministry further stated that owners of right-hand drive vehicles who already have stickers must urgently obtain temporary driving permits and license plates from their respective provinces.

Abdul Matin Qani, spokesperson for the Ministry of Interior, said: “They have seven days—especially those vehicles that are right-hand drive, which are not standard in Afghanistan—must leave Kabul. After this period, if they are found within the city, they will face strict action by the police.”

Drivers on major highways have welcomed the decision.

Kamin, one of the drivers, said: “If the import of Pakistani right-hand drive vehicles is banned in Afghanistan, it will be a good move. These vehicles can’t overtake trucks and trailers and cause major problems on highways.”

A month ago, the Ministry of Interior had already declared that, in response to rising traffic accident fatalities and to prevent further incidents, the movement of right-hand drive and unlicensed vehicles in Kabul was prohibited.
