Pakistani police have arrested journalist Jawed Quraishi in the city of Attock amid a growing crackdown on undocumented Afghan migrants.
Quraishi confirmed his arrest in a voice message following the incident, saying he was taken into custody by police in the Attock district.
The arrest comes as Pakistani authorities intensify detentions and deportations of Afghan nationals, particularly after an eight-day border clash earlier this month between Taliban and Pakistani forces.
On Wednesday, Oct. 22, another Afghan journalist, Mohammad Agha Sailani, was briefly detained by police in the Faisal Town area of Islamabad. He was released after spending one night in custody.
Pakistani police have not issued any public statements on the reasons for the journalists’ arrests.
Rights groups have raised concerns about the safety of Afghan journalists in Pakistan, especially as deportation pressures mount and many face risks of persecution if returned to Taliban-controlled Afghanistan.
