The General Directorate of Passports has announced that nearly 600,000 passports have been issued to citizens across the country over the past six months.
The department’s spokesperson stated that these passports were issued and renewed for citizens both inside the country and those returning from abroad.
Omari Logari, spokesperson for the General Directorate of Passports, told TOLOnews: “On average, up to 3,000 people visit the central passport office and its branches in the provinces daily, and passports are issued to them.”
According to Mr. Logari, special procedures are currently in place for patients, travelers with return tickets, and drivers on major highways, allowing their passports to be prepared and issued within 30 minutes to one hour.
He further added: “For citizens who urgently need a passport—such as patients with scheduled travel abroad, those with foreign residency, major highway drivers, athletes from the National Olympic Committee, and journalists—we have a fast-track process. Their passports are prepared and issued within 30 minutes to one hour.”
Meanwhile, Mohammad Sharif, a resident of Sar-e-Pul province who came to Kabul to get a passport for his sick mother, said he received it in less than two hours.
Mohammad Sharif said: “It’s excellent. Compared to the past, there are now more facilities for citizens. This is my first visit to the passport office in three years.”
Mohammad Zarif, another applicant from Ghazni province, noted: “In the past, getting a passport was very difficult. But now, it’s much easier.”
Previously, citizens faced major challenges in obtaining passports, with some cases taking up to a year and a half. However, with significant efforts by the Ministry of Interior, the passport issuance process has dramatically improved, and citizens can now receive their passports in just over an hour.
