Amid growing concerns in Europe over the presence of undocumented migrants, 19 European countries have formally requested the European Commission to facilitate the return of Afghans residing illegally in Europe, either voluntarily or forcibly, to Afghanistan.

These countries have stated that this move may even involve initiating dialogue with the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan.

They emphasized that the absence of a formal agreement with Kabul following the 2021 political shift poses a significant obstacle to the deportation process, including the return of individuals accused of crimes.

Alireza Karimi, a refugee rights activist, commented: “Forcibly returning asylum seekers to Afghanistan under current conditions contradicts humanitarian principles and international refugee protection obligations.”

Earlier this year, Germany’s Interior Minister stated that her country had resumed technical talks with Afghanistan regarding the return of migrants “accused of crimes” and confirmed that a delegation had traveled to Kabul.

She added that discussions with Afghanistan’s current authorities had taken place, centered on the issue of migrants, and expressed hope that these talks would yield results.

Wais Naseri, a political analyst, told TOLOnews: “The deportation of these individuals from European countries to Afghanistan is a serious issue, as none of the European states, the EU, or most countries around the world currently have formal or legal relations with the current rulers of Afghanistan.”

Juma Khan Pouya, another refugee rights advocate, stated: “No country has the right to punish or deport refugees and individuals at risk under any circumstances. Therefore, it is expected that all nations, especially European and Afghanistan’s neighboring countries, refrain from forcibly expelling vulnerable refugees and asylum seekers.”

This comes as, in July of this year, the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan reiterated that it supports resolving the challenges facing Afghan migrants through dialogue with host countries.
