The recent attacks by Pakistan’s military regime on cricketers in Paktika have sparked outrage among a number of Afghan national cricketers and athletes.
Several cricketers and athletes have strongly condemned the attacks in the harshest terms, calling on international organizations to prosecute the Pakistani military regime in an international court.
In last night’s attack by Pakistan’s military regime on the Argun district of Paktika, seventeen people, including several cricketers, were martyred, and sixteen others were injured.
The Afghanistan Cricket Board, while condemning the attack, described it as cowardly and announced its withdrawal from the upcoming T20 tri-series involving the Pakistani team.
Jabar Abdul Rahimzai, head of domestic cricket, said: “Any game that brings nations closer together attacking players in such a context is a savage act.”
In addition, several prominent national cricketers, especially Rashid Khan Arman, have voiced support for the Afghanistan Cricket Board’s decision to cancel the series with Pakistan.
Regarding the attacks, Rashid Khan stated: “I am deeply saddened by the loss of civilian lives in the recent Pakistani aerial strikes on Afghanistan. A tragedy that claimed the lives of women, children, and aspiring young cricketers who dreamed of representing their nation on the world stage. It is absolutely immoral and barbaric to target civilian infrastructure. These unjust and unlawful actions represent a grave violation of human rights and must not go unnoticed.”
Mohammad Basheer Taraki, head coach of the national Taekwondo team, said: “They targeted our cricket players. We urge all relevant United Nations bodies and the International Cricket Council to recognize this as a grave crime and to lodge formal complaints.”
Meanwhile, other players such as Mohammad Nabi have also condemned the attacks, calling them a major tragedy.
A number of national team athletes and coaches have called for the Pakistani military regime to be prosecuted by international organizations for the recent attacks and for the killing of civilians and cricketers.
Abdul Wasi Qayoumi, a coach in the Martial Arts Federation, said: “My appeal is that such attacks on Afghanistan and our sports sector must not continue. Global organizations must be vigilant and take action to prevent such assaults.”
Mohammad Khalid Hotak, a member of the national Wushu team, said: “These crimes must be stopped. The cricket board and the international cricket community must respond strongly and bring Pakistan’s military regime to justice.”
The cricketers came under aerial attack by the Pakistani military regime last night while returning to Argun district from the city of Sharana after a friendly match.
According to reports, 17 people, including several cricketers were killed and 16 others were wounded in the attack.
