The recent Pakistani military attacks on parts of Afghanistan have raised serious questions about potential war crimes committed by Pakistan.

Military analysts and legal experts consider Pakistan’s recent airstrikes on civilian areas in Afghanistan a clear instance of war crimes.

They state that under international law, particularly the four Geneva Conventions deliberate attacks on civilians, children, and unarmed individuals, including athletes during conflict, constitute war crimes.

Asadullah Nadim, a military affairs analyst, stated: “Attacks on civilians and residential homes by any side, group, or government have no justification whatsoever.”

The acting head of Afghanistan’s mission to the UN Human Rights Council also called Pakistan’s attacks on civilians a violation of international law, saying: “Under international law, civilians have the right to be protected from any kind of attack.”

Some international law experts emphasized that attacks on schools, hospitals, sports facilities, and areas where civilians gather are strictly prohibited, and violators must be held accountable.

Pakistan, which joined the four Geneva Conventions in 1949, has, according to military and legal experts, violated many of its international commitments and principles during its eight-day conflict with Afghanistan.

Ruhollah Sakhizad, a legal expert, said: “Any form of aggression against a country’s territory is a violation of national sovereignty, and the killing of civilians may be considered a crime against humanity.”

Meanwhile, Abdul Salam Zaeef, former ambassador of the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan to Pakistan, called the actions of Pakistan’s army “cowardly,” and claimed that all of Pakistan’s airstrikes have targeted civilians.

He added: “The martyrdom of our innocent compatriots and cricket players in Paktika is the result of Punjab’s cowardly actions. They only know how to kill, but lack the courage to fight. All the airstrikes and mortar operations they’ve conducted so far have resulted in 100% civilian casualties.”

According to preliminary reports, Pakistani military airstrikes on residential areas in Spin Boldak alone have left at least 40 people dead and 170 others wounded. In last night’s attack, another 10 people were killed, the majority of them women and children.
