At least 17 civilians were killed and 346 others injured in Spin Boldak district of Kandahar province during heavy cross-border fighting between the Taliban and the Pakistani military, the UN Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) said in a statement Thursday.
UNAMA said it had received credible reports of “significant civilian casualties,” including women and children, in what it described as one of the deadliest border incidents in recent years. The mission said it continues to assess the full scale of the damage.
The violence peaked on Wednesday in Spin Boldak, where the highest number of casualties on the Afghan side has been recorded so far. The clashes are part of a surge in cross-border hostilities that began on Oct. 10, leading to dozens of deaths and injuries across multiple provinces.
