The Taliban plan to carry out a public execution on Thursday in Badghis province in the west, the latest in a series of public punishments since their return to power.
The Taliban’s police command in Badghis said the man has been convicted of murder and will be executed by qisas — an Islamic law principle of retributive justice — in a public stadium in the provincial capital of Qala-e-Naw.
Since regaining power in August 2021, Taliban have resumed public executions and corporal punishment, despite widespread international condemnation.
In a previous incident in April, four men convicted of murder were executed publicly in Badghis, Farah and Nimroz provinces.
According to figures released by the Taliban’s Supreme Court, at least 177 qisas rulings have been issued in the past four years, with at least 10 executions carried out so far.
