At least five people were killed and 35 others injured following explosions in Kabul on Wednesday afternoon, according to EMERGENCY, an international medical organization operating in the Afghan capital.
At least 10 of the wounded are in critical condition, the organization said.
The blasts occurred around 4 p.m. local time, just a few kilometers from EMERGENCY’s Surgical Centre in Kabul, it added.
“We started receiving ambulances filled with wounded people, and we learned that there had been explosions a few kilometres away from our hospital,” said Dejan Panic, EMERGENCY’s country director in Afghanistan. “Forty people have arrived so far, including women and children. They have shrapnel wounds, blunt force trauma and burns. Ten are in critical condition. Unfortunately, five people were already dead on arrival.”
Panic noted that the casualty figures remain provisional, and the full scope of the damage is still being assessed.
