Torkham crossing closed after deadly Taliban-Pakistan border clashes

The Torkham border crossing between Afghanistan and Pakistan has been closed following overnight clashes between Taliban and Pakistani forces along multiple points of the border, Pakistani media reported Sunday.

The Taliban’s Ministry of Defense said its fighters launched a “successful retaliatory operation” that ended around midnight. Taliban claim the operation was in response to earlier Pakistani airstrikes on Kabul and Paktia province.

Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid said on Sunday that 58 Pakistani soldiers and 9 Taliban members were killed in the border clash.

Taliban said the strikes were based on “precise intelligence” and intended to retaliate against Pakistan’s air raids on Thursday night, which targeted areas in Kabul and Paktia. Pakistani media said those airstrikes were aimed at Noor Wali Mehsud, leader of Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), though neither Islamabad nor the Taliban have confirmed the target.
