Zabihullah Mujahid, spokesperson for the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan, has responded to recent comments by Russian President Vladimir Putin, who stressed that the border between Tajikistan and Afghanistan must remain fully secure.

Mujahid stated that Afghanistan’s borders are secure and that the border with Tajikistan receives particular attention compared to others.

Zabihullah Mujahid said: “Especially regarding the border with Tajikistan, the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan pays greater attention to its security. Both sides have their responsibilities in this regard. We have fulfilled our responsibilities well, and God willing, we will continue to give it even more attention.”

Earlier, in a press conference held in Dushanbe, Tajikistan, President Putin emphasized the importance of securing the Afghan-Tajik border.

He noted that while Afghanistan’s current leadership is making efforts to stabilize the country, many challenges still persist.

President Vladimir Putin stated: “We see that Afghanistan’s current authorities are trying and doing everything they can to normalize the situation in the country. However, many problems still remain, and Afghan officials themselves acknowledge and are aware of this. Therefore, it is essential for the border between Tajikistan and Afghanistan to be extremely secure.”

Previously, in a regional summit in Tajikistan, Putin had also mentioned that the Islamic Emirate is willing to cooperate in the fight against terrorism and drug trafficking — efforts which Russia supports.

Military analyst Mohammad Amin Zazi commented: “Major powers should set aside competition and work together to eliminate the root causes of these problems.”

Sayed Ebadullah Sadeq, a political analyst, added: “On one hand, Afghanistan is making efforts to ensure a secure border, to prevent interference or destabilization from its side, and to stop terrorist groups. But since this is a border issue, bilateral cooperation is necessary.”

This comes after President Putin, in a previous meeting with Tajikistan’s President, stressed the need for an independent Afghanistan free from terrorism.
